May 2017 Newsletter

JIS is proud to present the May (Pre-Las Vegas Jewelry Week) edition of Catching Up With JIS. This community newsletter is dedicated to providing you with industry news, trends, and updates on all things JIS. Don’t miss out on your chance to Catch Up!

In this edition of THE SCOOP, JIS sits down with Frank Jones, owner of Global Liquidators. Sit back, relax, and get comfortable as Frank tells us about his journey into the world of jewelry

How did you get started in the jewelry industry?

The ScoopIn 1973, at the age of 16, I went Christmas shopping for a smokey quartz ring for my girlfriend at a very busy Catalog Showroom called Golbro in Birmingham, AL. The place was mobbed. It was a beautiful, old, downtown store with men dressed in suits behind the counter selling beautiful merchandise as fast as they could go. The store made an impression on me. After I graduated high school in 1975, I went back there and asked for a job. They gave me one. I stayed there 7 years, working and learning the jewelry business from my mentor, Jerry Goldstein and the Goldstein family. I still owe them my ability to earn a living to this day!

What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear Jewelers International Showcase?

Vito! Trade shows are work for us. I've done every JCK Show since there's been a JCK show. We've done JIS Miami, twice a year since about 1995. Having a friend we see at each show makes it nice. We have known and been good personal friends with Vito Miceli for many years at JIS Miami Beach and now at JIS Las Vegas. Vito has helped us navigate our way through trade show ins and outs and always, always shoots straight with us. We try to save a night out for dinner or drinks with Vito at each show, not for business reasons, but for just hanging out. We always have a great time with interesting conversation.

What is your favorite book to read and why?

Anything by John Grisham. He knows how to spin a yarn.

What is one food you could eat every day for the rest of your life and why?

I don't like just one food. I like all food, that's my problem. Probably my favorite food of all time is Skyline Chili (Cincinnati style chili). We lived in Cincinnati for 7 years and both my children were born there. Cincinnati holds a special place in my heart and it's a great town to raise a family.

What are you looking forward to the most at JIS Exchange this year?

We'll eat some fine meals in Las Vegas, we'll meet some new customers at the show and I anticipate selling a lot of merchandise and making new "deals" but to be honest, the number one thing I look forward to is "the successful conclusion to the show".

2017 has been quite a year for JIS and it’s not even June yet. JIS January and JIS April - our two shows temporarily relocated to Ft. Lauderdale due to construction at the Miami Beach Convention Center - were both a success, thanks to everyone that exhibited and attended! Now that those shows are over, we are excited to head home to Miami Beach for the famous JIS October Show! JIS October will be the 1st show at the Miami Beach Convention Center since construction started.

There is a new day pattern this year (Sunday through Wednesday) as the show runs October 8-11, 2017. We’ll let you know when registration is open. If you’d like to exhibit, click here. Five months and counting!
